Men’s & Women’s Health

Women’s Health & Acupuncture

As women, there are some unique health concerns that may come up throughout our lives. Chinese medicine and acupuncture can treat many of these.  First we start with an in depth consultation and Chinese medical analysis to assess your body from the Chinese medicine perspective. This lets us know whether we can help and what a treatment plan might look like.

Here are some of the conditions that acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help women with:

Menstruation

Menstrual disorders are surprisingly common and can range from pain and cramping during the period, excessive bleeding or no period as well as cysts and endometriosis.  Pain is usually related due to vessel spasms and blockages in the lower abdomen which can be improved through a series of acupuncture visits. Hormones can also be regulated via acupuncture for improved menstrual cycle function.

Menopause

Menopause is a natural process which all women go through. It is defined as the end of menstruation and fertility, marked 12 months after your last period.  When your body is in good health, it should be a relatively smooth process with little to mild difficulties.

Challenging physical and emotional symptoms such as night sweats, hot flashes, dryness, insomnia, fatigue, sadness and irritability can be reduced fairly quickly through acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Chinese medicine has been treating menopause symptoms for more than 2000 years.

Fertility

Chinese medicine has been treating infertility for several thousand years.  Acupuncture helps increase blood flow to the reproductive organs, improving chances of pregnancy, including when IVF is used. Acupuncture also regulates hormones – the follicle stimulating hormone from the pituitary gland and estrogen and progesterone levels from the ovaries.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a condition that many women suffer from that has no ‘cure’ in Western medicine.  It is essentially an inflammatory condition in the body. Chinese medicine approaches fibromyalgia in two ways, finding two main types of fibromyalgia.

The first type of fibromyalgia is due to poor blood circulation, usually due to excess weight. Carrying extra weight puts stress on our blood vessels, reducing nutrient and oxygen circulation to the major muscle groups and sensory nerves.  The result is chronic pain.  Acupuncture is very helpful for this type of condition – as it increases circulation and oxygenation throughout the body, reducing the pain. Chinese medical diagnosis can also assist in pin pointing root causes of weight gain to best optimise one’s weight and health long term. The second type of fibromyalgia occurs in people with thinner constitutions who tend to have dry skin, difficulty sleeping and subject to anxiety and sensitive nervous systems.  For this type of patient, Chinese herbal medicine is used to restore fluid deficiency in the blood to better nourish the body, reducing pain and inflammation.

PMS

Many women suffer from PMS – premenstrual syndrome. Symptoms can range from emotional ups and downs, breast swelling and pain, bloating, food cravings to digestive difficulties.   From the Chinese Medicine perspective, PMS is usually due to poor flow of blood through the liver organ.  Acupuncture helps to improve blood flow through this important organ, balancing the emotions and other symptoms.

Men’s Health & Acupuncture

Men have unique health concerns and statistically higher rates of certain illnesses.   Chinese medicine and acupuncture can help treat and take steps to prevent many of these conditions.  First we start with an in depth consultation and Chinese medical analysis to assess your body from the Chinese medicine perspective. This lets us know whether we can help and what a treatment plan might look like.

Here are some of the conditions that acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help men with:

Prostate Health

Statistics* show, that for every 100 men, 12 will develop prostate cancer.  While acupuncture is not a cure for prostate cancer, it can help with prevention.  Acupuncture improves circulation, reduces inflammation and helps regulates the physical function of the reproductive system.

Sexual Health

At least 30% of men struggle with some kind of sexual difficulty at some time in their life.  Issues may include erectile dysfunction, libido changes and fertility.  Chinese Medical theory pin points various causes for these conditions, including dietary history, genetics, stress and work history. Acupuncture can assist with rebalancing the body, reducing stress, decreasing inflammation and pain and increasing circulation.

Depression & Anxiety

Depression among men is significant. Men are three times more likely than women to commit suicide.

Acupuncture helps you address the underlying causes of mental and emotional distress. It is a WHO recognized method for increasing energy and mental clarity and feeling in control of your life again.

Heart, Liver, Diabetes

Men are chronically under-caring for their health. They are 70% more likely to die from heart disease than women, 50% more likely to die of diabetes complications and twice as likely to  die from liver disease.

While acupuncture is not a ‘cure all’, it is a preventative medicine that reduces the underlying causes of these major health conditions. Acupuncture is a drug-free method to reduce stress and inflammation. It improves blood circulation which in turn improves the your body’s repair and regeneration functions.
