Is it safe?
Acupuncture is one of the safest forms of treatment available. Although there are no serious side-effects with acupuncture, a small number of people may feel nausea or lightheadedness after a treatment. There can also be occasional minor bruising.
Acupuncture needles are sterile and single-use. Unlike hypodermic needles (used for injections and to draw blood), acupuncture needles don’t cut you, therefore there is no risk for infection.
Although acupuncture is safe, please inform your practitioner if you are pregnant or could possibly be pregnant.
The most common side-effects are feeling rested and relaxed.
Does it hurt?
Everybody experiences with treatment differently, but most report minimal or zero pain. In fact, most people nap during their acupuncture session!
Although painless, acupuncture does stimulate sensation. Think of the feeling when a massage therapist finds that tight spot on your back. Acupuncture can create similar sensations, such as, warmth, mild aching, tingling, or brief pinching. Generally though, acupuncture creates a relaxed and calm feeling in the body.
Where will you place the needles?
Needles are inserted just below the surface of the skin. Based on your specific needs, needles are placed in acupoints that will stimulate circulation, energy flow and healing in strategic locations in the body. Although there are acupoints all over the body, most sessions focus on the forearms, lower legs, lower back or stomach.
How often will I require treatment?
The frequency of your treatment depends on the severity, length and unique factors of your condition. Typical recommended frequency ranges from twice a week to once a month.
How long will I require treatment?
We will be upfront about what to expect. After your initial consultation, you will receive a custom treatment plan that outlines the number of sessions recommended. Once you have completed your treatment plan, we will perform an evaluation to assess where you are in achieving your health goals.
How can I get the most out of my treatment?
We suggest eating a light snack before your session and avoiding caffeine and nicotine 90 minutes before and after treatment.
Diet, exercise and overall wellness are large factors in aiding quick recovery.
When you are stressed, your body’s Sympathetic Nervous System is activated. When activated, you will have decreased blood flow to important organs and limbs, restricted digestion and interrupted sleep. All of these factors will slow down your recovery. During your treatment, we can recommend simple ways for you to reduce stress in your daily life.
